How I Spent International Women's Day 2024

Mar 18, 2024

Did you happen to catch my LinkedIn post last week as I was prepping a talk for International Women’s Day?

I LOVE public speaking. The first time I ever gave a speech was for my 4th grade commencement.  I was ten years old. My whole family sat in the front row and I was my best possible self I could be, pigtails and braces and all!

Where are you on the public speaking continuum: love it or hate it? ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

  • Public Speaking is the most common phobia, affecting 75% of ALL people
  • Public Speaking anxiety is more prevalent than the fear of death, spiders or heights.
  • Over 90% of successful public speakers have experienced some sort of public speaking anxiety at some point in their lives.

Why you should learn to LOVE it: Public speaking does more than just elevate you in the eyes of your peers, manager and senior executives. Your presence on stage at company meetings, conferences and industry events can also affect your overall reputation. When you speak, you position yourself as an expert, which gives your words additional credence. Wherever you go, whatever you do with your career, you take all of this equity with you. (๐Ÿ’ƒ๐Ÿคญ)

Like anything, you only get better with practice. Confidence comes with competence and competence comes by taking action. Become competent. Try and try again.

I coach the Rutgers University MBS students and they are ALL nervous about presenting and public speaking.  Every single one of them. I coach them all on these 3 P’s:

๐ŸŽ‰Preparation – know all of the logistics and be sure you are 100% ready to go. Know the technology being used, know the audience, know the pain points, know what is off-topic, know any sensitivities. Be clear on your means of presenting – powerpoint, no powerpoint? Eliminate any and all potential mishaps or glitches.

๐ŸŽ‰Planning – map out your entire presentation. Organize it in a thoughtful way that flows. Pick strong visuals and captivating headlines. And know your talking points!

๐ŸŽ‰Practice – just like any athlete, the real work comes on the practice field. You have to rehearse. Go through the entire presentation. Say it out loud. Record it if it helps. This will pick up any glitches, flow issues, or unnecessary slides.

How did IWD go for me?  They were an amazing group. Engaged and inter-active. My topic: How to go from mundane to marvelous with JOY! โœจ  really allowed me to connect and share practical tips and tricks for any busy executive who wants to be free of the minutia. Let’s be honest, there are so many headwinds coming at us that could really keep us stuck in the mundane. The economy, politics, business and the demands constantly placed upon us as women.  It’s easy to become victims and feel like we are falling prey to our circumstances. But, what if that’s a lie? What if we could all be more than our circumstances?

In my talk, I share openly about some of my own personal hardships that launch me from mundaneness. When I focus on giving generously to my audience, I get back in spectacular ways. People listen, follow me, connect with me, download my freebies. But, the truth on why I share so personally in my talks? It CONNECTS me to my audience and immediately gives them ideas on how they might apply what I am teaching to their own life. This vulnerability helps others normalize whatever they are experiencing. Otherwise, we live under a coat of armor that we think protects us, but in reality it is where shame grows and festers.

Are you ready to go from mundane to marvelous?  Consider booking a discovery call to see if coaching with me might be a good fit. I have a few openings for April and May and I would love for you to slide in there and get yourself out of that coat of armor and out of whatever shame might be festering. Curious what I might have shared that was so personal with the folks at Stop & Shop? Let me give you a peek:

โœจStressed, exhausted and in the midst of a divorce, I joined colleagues for lunch at a deli after a big presentation to our division president. One minute I’m in line ordering a sandwich, next thing I know, I’m in an ambulance with my VP standing over me. I had collapsed. My body couldn’t take any more. I needed to make some immediate changes.

โœจA life-long battle with food, dieting, and overeating, I became obsessed with diets, body image, and being thin. All the while, my weight was yo-yo’ing and out of control. I was tired of constantly hating myself and the way I looked.

โœจAt 17, my youngest son was struggling during the pandemic (weren’t most of our teens? ๐Ÿ™‹‍โ™€๏ธ). I had a small window of opportunity to make a difference in his life. The choice was mine, but it would require a tremendous amount of faith.
