Why Joyful Leaders Are More Effective 💥
Nov 15, 2024We all know today’s fast-paced, high-pressure world of business requires some pretty thick skin. Results and performance are the primary focus with cost cutting the omnipotent threat to morale and job security. But, what if a leader could bring more than expertise and profit acumen to the game? What if they could bring JOY as a bonafide leadership strategy? Wouldn’t it be a breath of fresh air? I don’t know about you, but I’ve worked for my share of grouchy bosses and toxic workplaces. Not just rigorously demanding, but “did he really say that?”, steal your thunder kind of bosses.
👎Like the one boss who told me I was taking a man’s paycheck and preventing a family from eating. (I was young and single).
👎Or the other who told me to get my head out of my ass, that life couldn’t possibly be rainbows and unicorns. (As I told him I found a solution to the budget gap).
👎Or the Company who was straight out of an episode of The Bear. Dysfunctional alcoholics at their finest. Except I don’t know if any of them actually drank. It was just sheer dysfunction. All. The. Time. (Everything was a last minute fire drill).
So, I can spot effective leadership. I also know from the hundreds of people I’ve managed and coached, that JOY is a defining characteristic. Here’s how:
Joyful Leaders have High Emotional Intelligence (EQ)
Joyful leaders tend to have positivity on their side – whether it comes naturally or they work on it with attitude, perspective, and mindset coaching – as well as self-awareness which enables them to understand and manage their emotions, as well as those of others. You can spot this in a leader, they are typically more in tune with their own feelings, which allows them to respond to situations with empathy and resilience rather than reacting impulsively or defensively.
Emotional awareness helps a leader build stronger relationships with their teams as they can often pick up on non-verbal cues and offer support as needed. Maintaining composure and optimism, even in stressful situations, fosters trust and respect, creating a more cohesive and engaged work environment. High EQ, allows a joyful leader to handle conflicts with grace and that will inspire others to do the same!
Reflection: Think of a time when you’ve seen a leader with high EQ respond in a difficult situation. What did you observe? Conversely, what happens when a leader has low EQ and they become defensive?
Joyful Leaders have Strong Leadership Presence
Joyful leaders naturally exude emotional warmth and authenticity. Their positive attitude makes them more approachable, relatable, and human to their teams. When leaders show up with joy, they signal that they are engaged, present, and invested in both their own well-being and the well-being of their team. This presence fosters an environment of trust, where employees feel comfortable voicing ideas, concerns, and feedback without fear of judgment.
I remember the first time I encountered a leader who exemplified this essence. I was so drawn to her. I wanted to sit and have tea with her, I was sure we would be besties. It turned out she was running a $10B business, so I would need to admire her from a distance. I was mid-level. She was senior-level. #goals
Joy also breeds enthusiasm. When a leader radiates joy, they spark energy in their team, fueling a sense of excitement and motivation. Instead of being bogged down by negativity or burnout, joyful leaders keep morale high, helping employees remain focused and engaged. This ripple effect of positivity builds an atmosphere where everyone feels valued and motivated to contribute their best work.
Reflection: Who have you noticed in your career that exudes this type of reaction for you? What is it about them that you are so drawn to? And, what could you inherently do to incorporate more of into your own leadership strategy?
Joyful Leaders Make Decisions with Clarity and Confidence
When a leader is joyful, they are typically more clear-headed and confident in their decision-making. Why? You are not constantly second guessing yourself, your worth, or your own value. Joy doesn’t mean avoiding challenges or setbacks; rather, it allows leaders to approach difficult decisions with a mindset that is optimistic and growth-oriented. A joyful leader is less likely to be paralyzed by stress or fear, and more likely to make confident decisions that benefit the team and the organization as a whole.
Additionally, joyful leaders tend to embrace failure and setbacks as learning opportunities, rather than as something they’ve personally done wrong, hanging their head in shame. This growth mindset enhances their ability to think creatively, take risks, and adapt to changing circumstances—all critical skills in today’s rapidly evolving business environment. Joy fuels resilience, empowering leaders to stay focused on long-term goals, even when short-term challenges arise.
Reflection: Have you experienced the connection between a joyful leader and clear decision making and confidence? Tell me the story! I would love to hear.
There are more ways that JOY will contribute to your organization: Resilience, Organizational Culture and Work-Life Balance just to name a few. JOY is not just a feel-good, soft skill set; it is a powerful leadership strategy that will help YOU create a more resilient, engaged, and high-performing team who can navigate challenges with clarity and confidence.
If you’re a leader looking to elevate your impact, consider how incorporating JOY into your leadership approach can transform not only your own work but the lives of those around you. The effects of JOY in leadership are far-reaching—when leaders embrace joy, they unlock their full potential and inspire their teams to do the same
What if somebody could see you and your talents so clearly, extrapolate and communicate them – with a clear plan of action – in a way that you knew for certain you were a joyous leader?
