Honoring the Women Who Came Before Us
This week marks National Women’s History Week, first established by President Jimmy Carter (RIP) in 1980, when he proclaimed:
"From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often, the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength, and love of the women who built America were as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well…”
The Silent Sacrifices That Shaped Me
I was raised by unsung heroes like these—women who built America by serving their families, sacrificing their own dreams, and pouring everything into others. They taught me love, kindness, and selflessness. But where they fell short—through no fault of their own—was in showing me how to invest in myself. No one had taught them how to do it either.
I needed other women to teach me that lesson.
The Power of Investing in Yourself
I realized that living like a martyr or a victim wouldn’t bring me joy, peace, or fulfillment. As my life started to unravel—divorce, job loss, the passing of my mother—I knew I couldn’t do it alone. I had to lean on women who had walked before me. Women who were wiser, stronger, and willing to show me another way.
Meet Anne: The Woman Who Transformed My Life
She is, to this day, the most influential (living) woman in my life. She walked beside me through my darkest days, reminding me that investing in myself wasn’t selfish, it was necessary. When I was a single mother raising my boys with no extra money, no financial help from another living soul, she urged me to find a way for therapy, retreats, and leadership training because I needed to invest in myself, too.
“Change your thinking, change your life,” she would say. And she was right.
Why We Don’t Rise Alone
I carry this wisdom with me in every relationship, every opportunity, and every coaching session. Because the truth is, we don’t rise alone.
I have been shaped by so many incredible women—my divorce-kept sisters who are my family (yes, I literally kept my ex-husband’s sisters as my own), my stepdaughter, my sister, my nieces, my friends across seven states, my mentors and mentees, my colleagues and clients. And you—every woman reading this who seeks more joy, confidence, and fulfillment in life and leadership.
A Transformational Experience for 10 Women Only
If you’re feeling that pull—the one that says, it’s time, time to invest in me —I’m thrilled to share a collaboration with another extraordinary woman, award-winning photographer Tricia McCormack in the Berkshires.
