Let’s face it, there are plenty of ordinary people saying and doing rather ordinary things and finding great fame and fortune as a result. We see them all day long on social media. Influencers trying to influence, with little to no star power.
This week during a coaching session, my highly talented, highly successful client was describing an uncanny turn of events that went like this:
Yes, that’s how the universe works. It conspires to help you once you make up your mind that you want help. (The Alchemist)
That was it. She moved on. Business as usual in her day job.
But, here is where the story gets really good…
A few weeks later, the other co-founder called her for lunch. She declined. She was too busy with quarterly earnings and board meetings. He insisted, so they made a date for a month later.
That was last week.
She went into lunch with no expectations.
(I’m curious what you’re thinking and if you, too, would have gone in completely unassuming?)
He said, “Let me get straight to it. We want to hire you to be the first executive of our newest endeavor and we’re willing to pay you 5 times equity. Will you consider?”
This is the point where our coaching session began.
She said, “I was caught completely flat-footed and I have no idea why they would even want me for this role! I feel like such an imposter.”
What if my client is a unicorn and she has finally met people who have the ability to see unicorns?
Unicorns are the rare, highly gifted individuals who are touched with talents that cannot be taught, they are simply intuitive and insightful. These individuals carry themselves differently, but often do not know just how special they are. They think everyone thinks like they do; that everyone sees the world, the work, the situation, and the solution as they do. They haven’t figured out for themselves (yet!) that they are a unicorn.
This is where our conversation went.
What if you’re a Unicorn, gifted, talented and special. You have a golden horn and magical wings. But, you’ve been working among horses and donkeys, pretending you’re one of them; coming down to their level in order to make them feel better (boss included). What if you’ve finally met someone who has special vision to see unicorns and they see you clearly for who you are? And not only do they want that talent, they are willing to pay extra for it!
Her eyes welled with tears. And mine did, too.
What if this were your new truth?
What if somebody could see you and your talents so clearly, extrapolate and communicate them – with a clear plan of action – in a way that you knew for certain you were a unicorn? Would you want a coaching session with them?
